Counting the Omer - Calendar and Prayers

The “Counting of the Omer” begins on the night after the Shabbat during the week Pesach (Passover)- which also happens to mark the Feast of Firstfruits! The “Omer”counts fifty days between the holiday of Passover (Pesach) and the holiday of Shavuot (Pentecost).  Also known as “Sefirat HaOmer” (“Counting the Omer”).

Here is what Torah says about the counting of the Omer:

"From the day after the day of rest - that is, from the day you bring the sheaf for waving - you are to count seven full weeks, until the day after the seventh week; you are to count fifty days; and then you are to present a new grain offering to Adonai." Leviticus 23:15-16.  (from Complete Jewish Bible)

In the English Standard Version the translation is clearer:  “You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the L-rd."
It is the counting of days between the beginning of the barley harvest to the peak of the wheat harvest.  And here is the greatest part!  The very first time Israel reached the 50th day of "Counting the Omer"...the Torah was given by HaShem on Mount Sinai!  Thus the Feast of Shavuot (Pentecost) arrives!  Now you see why we count?  Not only because HaShem has commanded this, but because something great and wonderful happens on the fiftieth day!  And fifteen hundred years later HaShem sends His Ruach HaKodesh (His Holy Spirit) to His people in Jerusalem (Ten days after Yeshua ascends to the Father)!  Isn't this so wonderful?

DAILY PRAYER:
Here is a sample of the prayer you are to pray each evening during the 50 days:
Blessed are You, HaShem our G-d, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us regarding the Counting of the Omer.
Today is ___ day(s) of the Omer.
Or after 6 days:
Today is ___ days, which are ___ week(s) and ___ day(s) of the Omer.

May the All-merciful restore the service of the Temple to its Place. May it be Your will,  Adonai our HaShem and G-d of our fathers, that the Temple be speedily rebuilt in our days, and grant our portion in Your Law. And there we will serve You with awe, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years.”

50.  Erev Shavuot "Feast of Weeks"
Praying Scripture is very effective. This is what HaShem wants for His people: to know His will through reading His Words and to repeat them back to him—to literally remind Him of His promises. This is saying “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.” Proclaiming His Word removes spiritual strongholds that hinder the Lord’s work on earth.

“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; all day and all night they will never keep silent. You who remind the L-rd, take no rest for yourselves; and give Him no rest until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth”(Isaiah 62:7).

Within the counting of the 50 Days of the Omer the following special days may be observed:

Holocaust Remembrance Day "Yom HaShoah"
Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) Iyar
Yom HaZikaron "Israel Remembrance Day"
Pesach Sheni "Second Passover"
"National Day of Prayer"
"Yom Yerushalayim"
"Rosh Chodesh" New Moon Sivan

 Amen!  Be blessed!
Shalom, Shalom. Nancy
